The Acorn RiscPC

RiscPC (tower)

One of the main features of the Acorn RiscPC is its generous expandability - including its case. The basic RiscPC case consists of:

  • 4 cm high base layer – contains the motherboard
  • 6.5 cm high slicecontains two front-accessible drive bays (5.25" and 3.5") and two expansion card bays
  • lid
RiscPC (desktop)

More than one slice can be fitted to the case, giving it an virtually unlimited capacity. The layers are fixed together by a innovative system - 4 bolts hold it together (two inside and two outside) - and are locked/unlocked by just a quarter-turn by hand so that no tools are necessary to open the case - this is an enthusiast's computer. The bolts can be secured with padlocks.

The RiscPC Rocketship

2-slice tower

Someone at Acorn decided to take advantage of this expandability, and took it upon themselves to build a rocketship with 8 slices and an in-built toaster.

At the Olympia Acorn World (1996), Acorn demonstrated their second rocketship Risc PC. This one had 10 slices and an array of gadgets including a working pizza oven and remote controlled sink as the pictures below show.
